Speakers
Aug. 2nd - Mayor Yarbrough gave an update on the state of the village. What a show of support he brought with him; Police Chief, Fire Chief, Interim Village Manager, Interim Finance Director, Director of Code Enforcement, Director of Public Works. Among other things, Mayor Yarbrough spoke about the 40% decline in mysterious fires, the deep decline in drive-by shootings having 14 occur this year as apposed to 60 in the previous year. As far as Capital Development goes, the Village is looking for long-term solutions and not just allowing any developer come in without it showing a substantial benefit to the town.
Aug. 9th – Welcome to our 26th member!! Jason Ervin, the Interim Village Manage, was inducted and gave a fine classification speech. We found out he is an alumni of Morgan Park Academy, SIU, and Governor State University. He is an only child and married to an elementary school teacher. He enjoys sports and hopes to find time to coach a youth basketball team. Once again, welcome to our fellowship!!
Aug. 16th – Judy Woll and her husband Gary shared their adventure of the recent Elderhostel trip to Lafayette, LA. While in the heart of Cajun country, they learned about the Acadians flight from the evil British in Northeast Canada during the late 1700’s, visited a Williamsburg type Cajun village and a crayfish farm. Their trip also included speakers, slide shows, great music and fantastic Cajun cuisine. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Aug. 23rd – Natalie Gillespie, a former student ambassador, came for a visit. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a summary but I am sure it was wonderful to hear from her.
Aug. 30th – Naprapathic Physician, Morris J. Williamson, spoke to us on the obesity situation in this country. He spoke about how bad nutrition has been proven to effect behavior and cause early puberty. He also informed us that wellness programs in the workplace appear to be working. He stated the morbidly obese in this country has reached 20% in the adult population and 15 % among those under 19 years of age. He urges all to eat nutritionally balanced meals and get up and move!!
Club Business
Fundraising has begun!!! Please see Jim Mitchell with your ad for our placemats. The cost is $60 for a business card size ad. We need to fill about 40 spaces so tell your friends, family and business associates about this inexpensive form of advertisement.
Going once! Going twice!….. It’s Auction time! Saturday, November 3rd is the date. As a reminder, every member is responsible for $100.00 (10 tickets) in ticket sales and $100.00 in donations. Tickets should be available shortly so that sales can begin. Donations can be gathered from local businesses, friends, family, co-workers, or anyone else you can think of. Items should be new, gently used, or really cool. Think…would you bid on this if you wanted it? Donations can be in the form of dinners, seminars, gift certificates, vacation spots, airline miles, theater tickets, etc.. See Gary Woll for additional Contribution Forms. Remember this is the one major event of the year. The success of this event is directly related to our charitable giving and with recent state budget cuts our local organizations will need our help even more.
President Dawson would like everyone to bring in his or her favorite current headshot. He will be scanning the photos and updating the website so that we all look great when guests come to visit.
To help offset the cost of producing the video of Richard Hunt creating our centennial sculpture “Reaching Up Reaching Out” President Dawson is selling copies for $10.00. What a deal to have this event captured on film
by such a grand producer! Please contact Mike at interprod1@aol.com if you are interested in purchasing one.

Etcetera…
Labor Is the Burden of Our Being
Labor is the burden of our being,
A weight that weds us firmly to the earth,
Blessed servitude that serves a common meaning
On which each may erect a sense of worth.
Remember, then, the beauty of a calling
Demanding both integrity and skill:
A dancer in the drifts of early morning,
Yet traveling towards sunset through sheer will.
