Speakers
June 21, 2007 – Evan Plummer, our Ambassadorial Scholar, gave a wonderful presentation on his time in Mozambique. He went there with the intentions on learning Portuguese, in which he appeared to have mastered. He told us how he acquired a better understanding of the importance of perseverance, having to deal with racism in a country with unwritten rules on the matter. During his visit he was able to become an art instructor at a school he had tried to be a student at. He highly suggests visiting the Rotary Club of Polana if you ever get a chance. Evan said he felt the most welcomed each time he visited them. “Icaro Maputo” was a fantastic film he produced and starred in, based on the story of Ikarus, with reflections of his own journey. Look for it to be a winner at the Zanzibar International Film Festival in Tanzania this July.
June 28, 2007 – Sue Smallwood, District Governor, joined us as a representative of Alliance for Smile. We presented her with our check to support the cause. We in-turn were presented with a video of her recent trip to Ju Jiang, China where many volunteers performed corrective surgery for approximately 125 children. What a great way to make a difference in someone’s life!

To help offset the cost of producing the video of Richard Hunt creating our centennial sculpture “Reaching Up Reaching Out” President Dawson is selling copies for $10.00. What a deal to have this event captured on film by such a grand producer! Please contact Mike at interprod1@aol.com if you are interested in purchasing one. This is a great way to show Mike how much we appreciate all his hard work.
July 14th is the day for our Third Annual Jazz Fest. Mark your calendars. Mike Dawson will be giving us an update on the details and how everyone can assist in this major event.
If you haven’t purchased tickets to the play “HIZZONOR” showing at the Prop Theater in Chicago, there’s still time. You can purchase vouchers for the show until July 31st. The vouchers are $50.00 and the club receives more than half of the voucher price. This would be a great birthday or anniversary gift for your favorite person!

Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare,
And left the flushed print in a poppy there.

In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them. ~Aldo Leopold
I question not if thrushes sing,
If roses load the air;
Beyond my heart I need not reach
When all is summer there.

Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world. ~Ada Louise Huxtable
